Android Motion Assist: How to Turn It On

Learn how to enable Android Motion Assist, customize its visual cues and check the requirements for using it as a passenger.

Motion Assist is an Android feature designed to make using your phone more comfortable while travelling as a passenger. Google included it in the September Android Drop, announced on September 1, 2026.

This guide explains where to find it, how to control it and what to check if the setting is missing.

How Does Motion Assist Work?

Small visual bubbles appear near the screen edges. Using the phone's motion sensors, they respond to movement such as turning, accelerating and braking. Google says these cues can help reduce the mismatch between what your eyes see and what your body feels.

That describes the feature's intended purpose, not a guarantee of relief for everyone. Use it as a passenger; it does not make using a phone while driving safe.

Requirements and Setup

Google requires Android 17 or later and updated Google Play Services.

  1. Open Settings and search for Motion assist.
  2. Alternatively, tap your profile, open All services, then look under Personal & device safety.
  3. Open Motion assist and enable Start in a moving vehicle for automatic activation.

Add a Manual Control

Choose Add tile to Quick Settings on the feature's settings page. Automatic detection may miss a journey, so a manual tile gives you another way to control the overlay.

Adjust the Appearance

Open Customize to change opacity, color, shape and randomization. A live preview shows your selections.

Start with a subtle appearance rather than changing every option at once. If the bubbles distract you from the content you are reading, adjust one setting and compare the result.

What If Motion Assist Is Missing?

First check your Android version and Google Play Services status. If the documented requirements are met but the option is absent, consult Google's current help page or your device support team rather than assuming a hardware fault.

Record your phone model, software version and whether Settings search finds the feature. These details make it easier to explain the issue. This guide does not establish a separate release date for every Android model.

Trying It on Your Next Journey

Set up the feature before travelling, then try it briefly from a passenger seat. Notice whether the overlay is comfortable and easy to ignore while you read. If looking at the screen makes you feel unwell, stop using the phone and take a break instead of continuing the test.
