How to Enable Siri After an iOS Update

Learn how to enable Siri after an iOS update, set up Hey Siri, use the side button, and fix Siri not responding on your iPhone.

If you cannot activate Siri after updating your iPhone, start by checking its settings. A menu may look different in your new iOS version, and voice activation is a separate option from opening Siri with a button. This guide explains both methods and the checks to try when Siri does not respond.

Updated: October 5, 2026. Instructions cover the current iOS 27 settings and alternative labels found on earlier releases. Follow the labels actually shown on your device.

1. Turn On Siri in Settings

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Siri. On some iOS versions, look for Apple Intelligence & Siri instead.
  3. If you see Turn On Siri, select it and finish the onscreen setup.

Apple documents this setup in its guide to activating Siri. If Siri is already enabled, move on to the activation options below.

2. Enable “Siri” or “Hey Siri”

  1. In Settings > Siri, open Requests.
  2. On earlier versions, the equivalent menu may be called Talk & Type to Siri or Talk to Siri.
  3. Select the available “Siri” or “Hey Siri” option.
  4. Complete any voice setup prompts.

Not every device or language supports activation with just “Siri.” Use the phrase offered in your settings. Place the phone face up while testing: placing it face down can prevent voice activation.

3. Activate Siri With a Button

Enable Press Side Button for Siri in the activation settings. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the side button, then speak your request. On an iPhone with a Home button, press and hold that button instead.

Test with a simple request, such as asking for the time. If button activation works but your wake phrase does not, focus on the voice setup rather than assuming Siri is completely unavailable.

4. Check Access When the Phone Is Locked

If Siri works while unlocked but not on the Lock Screen, look for Allow Siri When Locked in your Siri settings and enable it if you want that access. Apple describes this control in its Siri settings guide. Its placement and availability can differ between versions.

5. Fix Siri Not Responding After the Update

Use these checks from Apple’s Siri troubleshooting guidance:

  • Check the internet connection. Confirm that your iPhone is connected before testing a request.
  • Repeat voice setup. Switch the “Siri” or “Hey Siri” option off and back on. When prompted, tap Continue, speak the displayed phrases, and finish setup.
  • Check spoken replies. Open Responses or Siri Responses and choose Prefer Spoken Responses if you want audible answers. A silent response is different from a failure to activate.
  • Restart the iPhone. If the Siri settings remain missing afterward, check your VPN configuration. Apple notes that some VPN profiles can prevent Siri use.

Does Enabling Siri Also Enable Siri AI?

These are different setup choices. On supported devices, iOS 27 may offer Try Siri AI (Beta). Apple says Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device and supported language; it starts in English and is not initially available in the EU on iPhone.

You can set up ordinary Siri without assuming that every AI feature is available. Installing an iOS update alone does not establish eligibility for Siri AI.

Quick Final Check

Test voice activation and button activation separately, first while unlocked and then while locked if you enabled that access. This helps identify which setting needs attention.
