iCloud+ Custom Email: What’s Changed?
Apple’s updated Custom Email Domain support page lists up to five custom domains and up to 10 personalized email addresses per domain. The page is dated September 30, 2026, and gives iCloud+ subscribers a useful reference when planning a custom email setup.
Five Domains Does Not Mean Ten Domains
A domain is the part after the @ sign. An email address includes both the name and the domain. For example, hello@example.com and contact@example.com are two addresses using the same domain: example.com.
This distinction matters when reading the update. Apple’s page lists five domains, while the figure of 10 refers to personalized addresses. It also says each person sharing a domain can create up to 10 addresses on that domain.
What Does Custom Email Domain Do?
With iCloud+, you can send and receive email through iCloud Mail using a domain you own, or purchase one. Apple supports existing addresses and creating new ones after setup.
For a website owner, a simple example might be one address for reader enquiries and another for editorial contact. Decide who will monitor each address before displaying it publicly. Creating additional names is only useful if messages receive attention.
What Do You Need?
Apple requires an Apple Account with two-factor authentication and iCloud Mail configured. Managed accounts are unsupported. An address already used by another Apple Account has restrictions that should be checked before adding it.
Use Apple’s updated support page to review those requirements before starting.
Can You Share the Domain?
Apple allows sharing with up to five other people. People outside Family Sharing must accept an invitation. On iOS 16 or later, sharing is supported beyond the family group.
Before inviting anyone, decide whether the address represents a person or a role. A named address and a general contact address serve different purposes, even when both use the same domain.
Why Do Some Guides Still Mention Three Addresses?
At the time of checking, Apple’s separate iCloud User Guide still listed three active addresses per person, while the newer September 30 support article listed 10. This article follows the newer support article; check your account’s setup screen if the displayed limit differs.
Availability and Storage Still Matter
Apple’s User Guide says Custom Email Domain is unavailable in some countries or regions. Mail uses iCloud storage, and a full storage allowance can prevent incoming messages until space is available.
Do not choose an email service solely by its address limit. Our suggested checklist is to compare the total cost, regional availability, storage needs, and how comfortably you can manage the account.
Before Moving an Existing Email Setup
Write down the addresses currently in use and identify messages you need to keep. Follow the provider’s migration instructions rather than assuming that adding a domain automatically transfers every previous message.
