iPhone to Samsung: Transfer Data Without an App

Transfer data from iPhone to Samsung using the new Smart Switch QR method. Check requirements, move supported content and troubleshoot missing options

Moving from iPhone to Samsung Galaxy can now involve fewer setup steps. On compatible devices, the updated Smart Switch workflow lets you start a wireless transfer by scanning a QR code, without installing Smart Switch on your iPhone.

Samsung still uses Smart Switch on the receiving Galaxy. “Without an app” means no additional Smart Switch installation on the source iPhone for this supported method. It does not mean every device supports the feature or that every type of data transfers automatically.

This guide follows Samsung’s official documentation, checked on October 3, 2026. It explains compatibility, the transfer process, alternative methods and what to verify before erasing your old phone.

Quick answer: During initial Galaxy setup, select iPhone or iPad, scan the displayed QR code with your iPhone’s Camera, authorize the connection and choose your data. The upgraded method requires iOS 26.6 or later and a compatible Galaxy running Android 17 / One UI 9 or later. Some content requires additional migration steps.

Check Compatibility Before You Start

Samsung’s official Smart Switch page lists the upgraded method’s requirements and excludes China mainland. Older phones may still support cable transfers or other Smart Switch workflows.

Item Requirement
Source iPhone iOS 26.6 or later
Receiving Galaxy Compatible device with Android 17 / One UI 9 or later
Availability Check regional support; upgraded method excludes China mainland
Preparation Charged phones, sufficient storage and a current backup

Check your iPhone’s software under Settings > General > About. On Galaxy, open Settings > About phone > Software information. Confirm the versions instead of assuming compatibility from the phone’s age.

Prepare Your Files and Accounts

Make a current backup before migration. Keep your iPhone until you have checked the transferred files and can access important accounts on Galaxy. A completion screen does not confirm that every item you need has arrived.

Make a checklist of essential contacts, photos, documents, messages and calendar events. Check whether important files are stored on the iPhone or only in iCloud. Keep account recovery information accessible while switching devices.

How to Transfer Using the QR Code

Follow Samsung’s updated migration instructions:

  1. Turn on your new Galaxy and begin initial setup.
  2. When asked about your previous device, select iPhone or iPad.
  3. Scan the Galaxy’s QR code using your iPhone’s native Camera.
  4. Place the phones beside each other, tap Continue on iPhone and enter its passcode when requested.
  5. Review agreements and permissions, then choose the data to transfer.
  6. Monitor progress and complete the Galaxy setup prompts.
  7. Open the Smart Switch notification to inspect transfer results.

Menu names can vary. Enter credentials only in the expected setup interface, and never give your passcode to someone offering transfer assistance.

What Data Can You Transfer?

Supported categories include contacts, messages, photos, videos, files, notes, calendar entries and selected settings. The available selection depends on your devices and transfer method.

Smart Switch can suggest matching Android apps where available. This does not mean iOS apps run directly on Android or that every app’s private data moves with them.

Check banking apps, authentication tools and password managers individually. An installed app icon does not prove that its credentials or stored content transferred. Verify access before removing the old device from your accounts.

WhatsApp and iCloud May Need Extra Steps

Samsung notes that WhatsApp migration can require a separate wired step after wireless transfer. Follow the official prompts and current app instructions. Do not assume an iPhone cloud backup automatically restores on Android.

For supported cloud content, Smart Switch also offers iCloud import. Samsung’s iPhone migration guide explains this option.

Check full-resolution photos and important documents after importing. Seeing a thumbnail is not enough to confirm that the complete file is available.

What If the QR Option Is Missing?

Check both software versions and confirm that you are following the documented initial-setup workflow. If you already use the Galaxy, consult Samsung’s guidance for importing after setup. Do not erase it merely to search for a QR code.

When the upgraded method is unavailable, use a supported USB cable transfer or an older wireless Smart Switch workflow. These methods have their own requirements and may offer different data categories.

Samsung says an interrupted wireless session can be restarted through Smart Switch. Review the error message and available storage before retrying. A small selection of recognizable files can make the next result easier to verify.

Before You Erase Your iPhone

Open several transferred photos, play a video and check a familiar contact, calendar event and important document. Compare your selection with the transfer report.

Samsung recommends turning off iMessage when moving messaging to Galaxy. Test incoming calls and text messages after arranging your SIM or eSIM transition with your carrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Smart Switch on my iPhone?

Not for the upgraded compatible QR method. Older wireless workflows may require the iPhone app.

Does everything transfer wirelessly?

No. Review the offered categories and follow-up steps. App-specific content can have separate requirements.

How long does the transfer take?

There is no universal duration. Data size, connection conditions and device performance affect progress. Follow the displayed estimate and inspect the completed result.

Should I erase my iPhone immediately afterward?

Wait until your essential files, messages and account access have been checked on Galaxy, and keep a backup of anything important.
