PS5 New Update: What’s Changed?

What is new in PS5 update 26.07-14.20.00?
Sony lists one change: improvements to on-screen messages and usability on some screens. It does not identify the individual screens affected or provide examples.
The published entry does not announce new graphics modes, higher frame rates, additional games or a redesigned home screen. There is also no performance benchmark attached to this release, so it should not be described as a confirmed FPS boost.
How does it differ from previous PS5 updates?
The preceding version, 26.06-14.10.00, listed security fixes and system performance and stability improvements.
An earlier release, 26.06-14.00.00, included more visible additions, such as a voice-chat speaker indicator and a Community Activity widget. It also enabled Enhance PSSR Image Quality by default on PS5 Pro.
Those changes belong to earlier releases. PSSR is a PS5 Pro feature; this latest usability patch does not add it to the standard PS5.
How to install the new PS5 system update
- Open Settings on your console.
- Select System > System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software and follow the instructions.
Your console shows an availability notice when a newer version is offered. Keep the console powered during installation.
Enable automatic system updates
In Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, enable Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically.
For updates in rest mode, also enable Stay Connected to the Internet under Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
These system software controls are separate from the settings for automatically updating individual games and apps.
What if the update download gets stuck?
Press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system update, and select View Error Info > Try Again.
If repeated downloads fail, Sony provides an official USB update method using a PC or Mac. Follow its PS5 system software update guide for the correct file and folder structure.
Choose the update instructions carefully: reinstalling system software is a different operation that deletes console data. It is not a routine step for installing this patch.
Should you expect a noticeable difference?
Based on Sony's description, this release is best understood as interface maintenance. You may not notice a major visual change after installation, and Sony has not detailed which messages were revised.
