iPhone Notifications Not Working? How to Fix It
Missing an alert does not always mean your iPhone failed to receive it. Notifications can be silent, hidden in Notification Center, delayed by Scheduled Summary, or affected by a Focus setting. Checking which of these situations applies is more useful than changing every setting at once.
Updated: October 5, 2026. This guide covers iPhone notification settings, including iOS 27. Menu labels may vary by software version and app.
First, Identify What Is Missing
- No alert from one app: start with that app’s notification permissions.
- Several apps are quiet: check whether a Focus is active.
- Alerts arrive together later: check Scheduled Summary.
- The alert appears without sound: check audio settings.
Change one setting, then ask someone to send a fresh test message. Keep the app, device state, and test method consistent so you can tell which change helped.
1. Enable Notifications for the App
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Select the affected app.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where alerts should appear: Lock Screen, Notification Center, or Banners.
Apple explains these controls in its notification troubleshooting guide. Enabling permission and choosing a display location are separate checks.
2. Check Focus and Do Not Disturb
Open Control Center and check for an active Focus, such as Work, Sleep, or Do Not Disturb. Turn it off temporarily and test another notification. If alerts return, adjust that Focus rather than leaving it permanently disabled.
Go to Settings > Focus, select the relevant profile, then open Apps. With Allow Notifications From, add the apps you want to hear from. With Silence Notifications From, check whether the affected app is on the silence list.
These modes have opposite purposes. Apple’s Focus guide explains how to allow or silence specific apps. Also check automatic Focus schedules if the problem returns at a similar time each day.
3. Stop Delaying Important Apps With Scheduled Summary
Open Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary. This feature collects notifications from selected apps for delivery at scheduled times.
For an app you want to hear from promptly, open its notification settings and choose Immediate Delivery where available, rather than Scheduled Summary. Apple describes the options in its notification settings guide.
Scheduled Summary and AI notification summaries are different: one schedules delivery, while the other condenses notification text. Start with the delivery setting when alerts arrive late.
4. Fix Notifications That Have No Sound
In Settings > Notifications > [App], check Sounds if the app provides that option. Confirm that the iPhone is not silenced and that alert volume is audible.
Apple notes that notifications will not play sounds when the phone is silenced or the volume is turned down completely. See its guide to using notifications. A visible alert with no sound points to a different problem from an alert that never appears.
5. Check Hidden Alerts and Previews
On the Lock Screen, swipe up from the middle to view Notification Center. If the display is set to Count, tap the notification count to see the alerts.
If an alert appears but its message text is hidden, check Settings > Notifications > Show Previews. Options include Always, When Unlocked, and Never. Choose the level of visibility you prefer; a hidden preview does not mean the notification was not delivered.
6. Check App Settings and Apple Watch
Some apps provide their own notification controls. Where available, use the link to the app’s settings at the bottom of its iPhone notification settings, then inspect the relevant alert categories.
If you use Apple Watch, Apple says notifications normally go to either the watch or the iPhone, rather than both. Check the watch before treating a quiet iPhone as evidence of a missing alert.
If the Problem Continues
Note whether the issue affects one app or several, whether the iPhone is locked, and whether the alert appears elsewhere. Share those observations with the app developer or Apple Support; they make the problem easier to investigate.
