PlayStation Account: How to Create, Sign In, and Recover

Learn how to create a PlayStation account, sign in on PS5 or PS4, reset your password, and protect your account with a passkey or two-step verificatio

A PlayStation account lets you access PlayStation services and use your profile across supported devices. Whether you are setting up a console for the first time or returning to an existing account, knowing which sign-in method to use can prevent unnecessary setup problems.

This guide explains how to create an account, sign in on PS5 or PS4, recover a forgotten password, and set up stronger account protection.

Before You Create a PlayStation Account

Creating an adult account is free and does not require payment information. Have an accessible email address ready, and enter your correct date of birth and country or region. PlayStation states that these two details cannot be changed after registration.

If you already have an account from PS4, use it on PS5 rather than registering again. Your existing account retains information such as your friends, trophies, and PlayStation Plus membership.

How to Create a PlayStation Account Online

  1. Open the official account creation guide and follow its Account Management link.
  2. Choose the new-account option and complete the registration fields.
  3. Check your inbox and use the verification message to confirm your email address.

How to Create an Account on PS5

From the home screen, open your profile picture, then choose Switch User > Add User > Get Started. At the sign-in screen, select the account creation option, complete registration, and verify your email.

For a child, use PlayStation’s family-account setup rather than entering an adult birth date.

How to Sign In on PS5 or PS4

On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In. On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Sign In.

Follow the sign-in method associated with your account. That may involve your email address and password, or a saved passkey. If two-step verification is enabled for password-based sign-in, complete the additional verification prompt.

Your sign-in email and your public online ID serve different purposes. When a login form asks for your email, entering your gaming name will not complete that field correctly.

How to Reset Your PlayStation Password

If you have forgotten your password, start from the official sign-in page and choose Trouble Signing In?, followed by Recover Your Account. Complete the recovery instructions rather than creating a replacement account.

PlayStation also provides a recovery route from the PS5 sign-in screen under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In. For the current instructions, use the official password reset guide.

Before requesting another recovery message, check which email account you are viewing. If you have several addresses, searching your inboxes for previous PlayStation receipts can help you identify the one you used.

If you cannot access that mailbox, recovering access to the email account may be necessary. When the self-service process does not resolve the problem, contact PlayStation Support through its official website.

Protect Your Account With a Passkey

A passkey replaces password-based sign-in with authentication through a compatible device or credential provider. PlayStation supports this as an account sign-in option.

  1. Sign in to Account Management and open Security.
  2. Enable Sign in with Passkey.
  3. Select Create a Passkey and follow the setup instructions.

On PS5, the passkey option is available under Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security. Follow the displayed QR-code instructions using your mobile device.

Before relying on the new method, make sure you understand where the passkey is stored and how you will access it after replacing your phone. PlayStation’s passkey guide explains supported setup and sign-in options.

Use Two-Step Verification if You Keep Password Sign-In

If you continue using a password, two-step verification adds a verification-code step. PlayStation supports codes from an authenticator app or text messages.

  1. Open Security in Account Management.
  2. Edit the two-step verification setting and choose a verification method.
  3. Complete the phone-number or authenticator setup.
  4. Enter the requested code to activate protection.
  5. Save the backup codes somewhere secure.

Backup codes matter because losing access to your phone can otherwise interrupt account access. Store them somewhere you can reach independently of that device, and do not share them.

Use the official two-step verification instructions if you need help with setup or recovery. Passkey sign-in and password-based two-step verification are different authentication approaches; follow the instructions for the one your account uses.

What to Check When PlayStation Sign-In Fails

Check Whether the Problem Is Your Connection

If your console cannot get online at all, resolve the connection problem before repeatedly changing account settings. Try another online service or device to narrow down the issue.

Our guide to fixing PS5 Wi-Fi connection problems covers that separate troubleshooting path. You can also check the PlayStation service status page for reported disruptions.

Check Your Sign-In Details

Confirm the email address and authentication method before making another attempt. If you recently changed your password, check whether your browser or password manager is still entering an older one.

Keep Track of the Error

Write down the error code, the device you are using, and whether the same account works in a browser. Those details help distinguish a console-specific problem from an account-access issue.

Sign Out When Using a Shared Device

On PS5, sign out through Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Sign Out. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Sign Out.

If you no longer have physical access to a device, Account Management provides a Sign Out on All Devices option under Security. See PlayStation’s sign-in and sign-out guide for details.
