PS5 Controller Not Charging? How to Fix It
A PS5 controller that will not charge can interrupt a gaming session even when the console itself works normally. Before replacing your DualSense, test the charging connection and find out whether the problem happens with the PS5 turned on, in rest mode, or both.
This guide gives you a practical order for troubleshooting. Change one thing at a time so you can identify which cable, port or setting makes a difference.
PS5 Controller Charging Problems at a Glance
| What you notice | First check |
|---|---|
| No charging indicator | Test a direct connection with the console on |
| Charges only while PS5 is on | Check rest-mode USB power settings |
| Charging stops when cable moves | Compare cables and inspect the connector |
| Light turns off after charging | Check whether the battery is already full |
1. Confirm Whether the Controller Is Charging
Press the PS button, open the control centre and select Accessories. The battery icon animates during charging and shows three bars when fully charged. In rest mode, the light bar slowly blinks orange while charging and switches off when charging finishes.
A dark light bar alone does not establish a fault. Check the battery level before assuming that charging has stopped unexpectedly.
2. Test the Included Cable and Another USB Port
Use the included USB cable to connect the controller directly to your PS5 while the console is on. For this test, remove hubs and extension cables from the connection. If charging does not start, try another USB port on the console.
Next, try another cable labelled charge and sync or charging and data. PlayStation’s DualSense support guide recommends this cable type for charging troubleshooting.
Keep the test controlled: use the same port when comparing two cables, then use the same cable when comparing ports. If only one combination works, that result helps narrow down the fault without buying a replacement controller first.
3. Enable USB Power in Rest Mode
If charging works while the console is on, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. Select Always or 3 Hours. The latter supplies power for three hours after entering rest mode.
Some supported console models also offer Adaptive charging. Availability depends on the model and connection requirements; see PlayStation’s rest-mode charging instructions. For diagnosis, testing with the console on avoids confusion about when rest-mode power ends.
4. Inspect the Cable and Controller Port
Disconnect the cable and look for obvious damage, a bent connector or a loose fit. Do not force the plug or keep twisting it to maintain a connection. A connection that depends on cable angle suggests a mechanical issue, but it does not identify whether the cable or controller socket is responsible.
If another cable fits securely and works normally, replace the suspect cable. If several known-working cables fit loosely or disconnect in the same way, have the controller inspected.
5. Reset the DualSense
PlayStation recommends resetting a controller when troubleshooting persistent issues:
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller’s USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole near the Sony logo on the back.
- Use a pin or similar tool to hold the button inside for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect with the included USB cable and press the PS button.
You can follow the illustrated steps in PlayStation’s controller reset guide. Also keep the console’s system software current. A reset can help troubleshoot controller behaviour, but it cannot repair a damaged connector or worn battery.
6. Compare Another Controller or Charging Method
If you have access to a second DualSense, test it with the same cable and console port. When the second controller charges normally and the first does not, the first controller deserves closer inspection. This is a useful comparison rather than a definitive battery diagnosis.
PlayStation says USB-standard-compliant chargers may be used, although some devices cannot charge the controller. A failed test with one phone charger therefore does not prove the DualSense is broken.
When to Contact Support
Contact PlayStation support or an authorised repair provider if the controller still fails with a known-working cable and port after resetting. Record which combinations you tested and whether the battery indicator appeared; these observations help explain the problem clearly.
Do not assume every charging problem needs a new battery. The charging socket, cable and internal electronics can produce similar symptoms. Check warranty coverage before arranging a paid repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my PS5 controller charge only when the console is on?
Start by checking the rest-mode USB power setting. Also consider whether a timed power option has already ended.
Does no orange light mean the controller is broken?
No. Check the battery level and the conditions under which you are charging it. A completed charge can leave the light off.
Should I replace the controller immediately?
First compare the cable, port and rest-mode behaviour. Those checks can identify a simpler problem and give a repair provider better evidence.
Once your controller is ready, catch up on our GTA 6 guide covering release details, the map and vehicles.
